The server is dead for more than two years and no news since a year ago, so the guide will not be maintained until the next official announcement.

Aura are watching you, no matter where you go.
This guide is mostly recommended to anyone who needs the reference. Please read the whole guide as much as you can before contacting me.

Back in the beginning of 2014, I had the conversation with @Siegfre, asking for the permission to write this guide since there are inactive guides. This guide was made to help anyone to play [The World].

I strongly recommend you, yes you, to help me out. Corrections, suggestions, recommendations, etc. are mostly appreciated. Other than corrections, some will be likely to be reviewed before adding to the guide. I will have to approve it before it can be added.

Remember, I'm the committee member! If ever you need help related to non-development issues or anything else, contact me or other committee members. You also can contact me to clear up any misunderstandings on this guide.

There are two ways to play. One is to wait for Friday or Saturday since the game is open to public on Fridays and Saturdays (US Eastern Time/GMT -4). Another one is to donate at least $40 to Iridium Based which can be found here, to receive the key. Free accounts, however, will not be persisted into the beta or the final release, so it is best to donate as soon as possible to not risk losing your account.

[TheWorld] is in early stages, so there will be bugs and some unexpected stuffs. It is best if you report that in Bug Reports section of the forum. It is advised that you don't create new thread. Instead, look at the stickied thread and post a reply there to report bugs.

[TheWorld] should be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, however, that always isn't the case, because it's always for Windows. If you want to test play on either Mac or Linux, be sure to contact @Siegfre. To get the latest update of the game, it should be found here (Progress Updates section of the forum), but it is not needed since you can patch while in game. Sometimes patcher does not work, so it's best to download there.

There will be no FAQ here since Kale (@calmchaos) already created FAQ for you. If you are unsure yourself, you should check it out. And if you have unanswered questions, check this thread.

To get started, get game and/or key. (Getting Started)

    1) Start downloading the game. It should be a zipped folder.

1.1) Open the zipped folder you downloaded. Inside it has the folder "[TheWorld]Client_Data" and the file "[TheWorld]Client.exe".

1.2) Create a new foler anywhere, and in this example, I created the folder "The World" in Documents. Use any extracting software, but in this example, I use the file explorer. Extract contents inside the zipped folder to that folder you just created.

    2) Open [TheWorld]Client.exe. The window will pop up on the start where you can change preferences to your liking.

2.1) From the configuration, you can change your preferences. They are very simple, so you should know what you're doing. Though it is advised to not touch anything in "Input" tab.

2.2) When you are done changing your preferences, you may click "Play!" button to start the game. At the startup, you will notice that there is a bar and the button. It is called "patcher," meaning the client will fetch the latest update from the server (which is often found in Progress Updates section of the forum) and then patch the client and its files itself.

2.3) If the patcher does not have "Download" button, instead it's replaced by "Play" button, skip to step 2.5. Otherwise, click "Download" button to download the latest version. If it is working, there should be a green bar rising from left to right.

2.4) When the patcher is finished, the game will restart. Once it finish its restart, the configuration window will pop up again. Just click "Play!" button again and you're all good to go. The preferences are already saved so you do not need to touch it again.

2.5) At the patcher, click "Play" button. A login screen will appear and should look like this:

    3) There are two things you can do on the login screen: log in and register. First thing... you'd want to create your account. It is advised to not click "Register" button first since it simply will do nothing. First, fill in the username you want it to be. Do not use email address as your username! Username also will be your display name, so choose it wisely. Then, fill in the password you want it to be. It is advised to not share it with others, even staff members. When you are done, you now can click "Register" button. It will create your account.

If you are on Fridays and Saturdays, skip to step 4. Otherwise, continue.

3.1) As soon as you created your account, it was stored in the server database. Then, you now can click "Login" button without changing either username or password. It will now try to connect to the server and if succeed and the information is valid, you'll be greeted with this error message:

3.2) Close it by clicking "X". Type in the alpha key you obtained from Siegfre or by email. Afterwards, click "Register" button.
    4) You should be still on the login screen after applying alpha key or creating account. Just log in.

4.1) You should be in Aqua Polis, the starting root town. Play as you like or continue to next section.

    UI Elements
Most MMOs have user interface (UI) to begin with. Usually it contains heads-up display (HUD) or status bar, hotkey bar, and chatbox. They are pretty much basic, you can just skip them. Since it's your first time and this game is based on .hack series, you probably will want to learn MMORPG's UI elements, yes?

The screenshot above shows heads-up display. It has avatar, health bar, mana bar, and exp bar. Similarity to what you had played in .hack series, mostly is pretty same. Please notice that avatar isn't available until future updates or final release. Current UI elements are not intended for final release as well.

Health bar - Represented by color red. It is your health. You know, once an enemy hits you, your health is drained. It can be restored by an item or a spell. Once your health reaches 0, it's game over. You will be greeted by a message "Will you return to the town?" and click 'Yes' to return to root town. However, if you click 'No', you will become a ghost and enter the world of Aos Si and you can wait for someone to revives you. It is useful if you're in party. More about Aos Si is explained in different section.

Mana bar - Represented by color blue. It's your special points (SP) or magic points (MP). Once you used skill or cast spell, it will drain your mana. When it reaches 0, you can't use skills or cast spells. It can be restored by an item only.

Exp bar - Represented by color orange. It's your experience throughout the game. It helps you to level up your character. Whenever you kill enemies or complete quests, you get your experience. Once the bar is full, your character levels up and then the bar resets. Oh, exp stands for experience.

The screenshot above shows both shortcuts to menus and hotkey bar. There are four shortcuts: Options, Character Profile, Inventory, and Quest Log (unclickable). The quest log isn't available until there are actual quests. Also, when using a Wavemaster weapon, spells are automatically assigned to hotkey bar, so you cannot assign spells or skills as there are no menu for that yet.

The screenshot above shows the chatbox. It gives you four channels: local, world, party, and guild. It is very simple to use. Simply you only have to press enter to start typing and then press enter again to send the message.

Local channel - Reveals your message to nearly players.
World channel - Reveals your message to all over game, so everyone can see your message, mostly similar to a shout.
Party channel - Reveals your message to players currently in party.
Guild channel - Reveals your message to players currently in guild.

    Personal Character
PC, or Personal Character, is your character created at the beginning. You can edit your PC at anytime as you want but this will be not in final release. To edit your character, of course you must open Character Editor. This section pretty much explains Character Editor, so when new information is out in the future updates, this section will be rewritten.

Yes, it have changed quite a bit. There is now both two arrows. The first arrow (>) is for changing colors, while the second arrow (>>) changes the look or cloth piece.

    To be continued...

    Menu Usage
This section will pretty much explains the most menus currently in game. Some is not currently in game, making them unclickable. The current menus are: Options, Inventory, Character Profile, Character Editor, System Settings, Input Settings, Chaos Gate, Flash Mail, and Friendslist. We will start with Options and then System Settings, as they are important in game.

The menu Options (ESC) gives your five choices: System Settings, Game Settings, Log Out, Exit Game, and Resume Game. Game Settings is unclickable for now, but the rest should work. System Settings will change video setting, toggle some options, or edit inputs. Clicking log out will take you back to login screen, while clicking exit game will shut down game. The last, resume game, will resume game as it suggests.

Here is Game Settings menu and it seems you mostly only can is to toggle. But you can change inputs as well by clicking 'Edit Keys'. When you click to toggle an option, it will show the double left arrows next to it.

Advanced Shaders Toggle - Improves shadows, but may causes lag.
Anisotropic Filtering Toggle - Enhances the image/video quality of textures on surfaces of graphics that are at oblique viewing angles.
Contrast Enhance Toggle - Enhances the impression of contrast for a given camera.
Bloom Toggle - Brightening the image/video quality, very common in most games, such as opening doors to outside and it becomes very bright between characters and dark place. May causes lag.
VSync Toggle - Turning this on will greatly increase performance if you have good graphic card as with it off will depend on frames per second too much that it will causes lag. Recommend to have it on if you have good graphic card.
Depth of Field Toggle - Focuses on anything that is close, while defocusing on the further far away.
Sound Toggle - Toggle the sound on or off.
Edit Keys - Opens the input settings.
Y Mouse Invert - Inverts the y-axis camera movement.
Oculus Toggle - Turn on your Oculus Rift to use with the game. Must have first-person camera enabled afterwards.

If you click 'Edit Keys' in Game Settings, it will open Input Settings, as shown in screenshot above. It is non-functional but at your own risk you can. Here you can change inputs to your preferences such as game controller. Because it is non-functional, it can causes controls to become bugged and it also lags horribly. You can fix it yourself (Controls/Actions).

Inventory (I) is your everyday bag where you keep stock of your things (items, weapons, armors, etc). You also keeps your money (GP). GP is common money currency in .hack series, it is used for buying things from NPC shops, or even guild shops. To equip a weapon or an armor, click on it. To unequip, open Character Profile (C) and click on weapon or armor. To use an item, click on it.

Character Profile (C) is your PC's profile. It shows your character and equipment. It also shows your character's stats by clicking statistics.

The statistics as shown in screenshot above shows your character's stats. Usually they all start with 99. Though it is cut off the screen because of the default resolution.

Friendslist (P) is a list of friends you've made. To add a friend, left click on player then click Friend Invite.

Flash Mail (F3) is considered as a "mailbox" that holds messages from players. You can read, reply, and send messages to other players anywhere and anytime and it is very functional.

Chaos Gate (F3) is a warp menu where you select an area to warp to or a root town to warp to.Though the game is still in alpha, it does not automatically generate an area. There are pre-made fields for you to go in to battle enemies and wander in dungeons.

    Shop Usage
There are three currently exists in [The World]. Two shops are at Chaos Gate area, while one shop is inside a shop just next to the tower (look for a glowing ground). To shop, get close to them until a message appears lower-right of the screen saying "[e] to shop." I will explain all three shops and how shopping works here. I know there is a fourth shop, but it isn't where you "buy" or "sell."

    [IMG] [IMG]
This beautiful bunny girl sells useful potions. Buy them and use them in battle!

    [IMG] [IMG]
This female soldier sells important armor pieces for your journey. If you ever feel weak at first time, be sure to pay a visit to her.

    [IMG] [IMG]
Lastly, but not least, this blacksmith sells his forged weapons for your journey. If you changed class, be sure to go to him for a new weapon.

    [IMG] [IMG]
Now it is time to explain how shops work. Look at the first screenshot, that's Buy screen, where you can buy for things you need. The second screenshot is Sell screen, where you can sell useless items or weak equipment pieces. This new update now tells you that you've bought or sold an item. Strangely, weapons are free so you don't have to worry about wasting your GP.

    Class Stats
Strangely, all starting stats are 99. However, if you equip a weapon and armor pieces, stats will change. This section will be rewritten once there are correct stats for each class.

    Chaos Gate
    [IMG]
This function is very important if you need to transfer to another area or root town. To open Chaos Gate, press F1 or click on it. The menu will open showing a list of word called Keywords. Unlike in .hack series, you do not earn keywords to unlock a certain area. As explained before, there is no function that will automatically generate area (for now), but there are pre-made fields you can go in.

As you can see as shown above, there are three keywords that you will need to form an area. For example, Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground will form an area (not dangerous through) and it will do as similar in .hack series. To navigate, use WASD (WS for up and down, AD for left and right). When you are finish, click 'Warp' button. You should be in an area. To gate out, just press F1 like you opened Chaos Gate.
